Jamie George’s practice centres upon production of objects, photographs and videos that have a sculptural concern, exploring the cultural identities and histories of everyday materials. His work often plays on the sliding scales of symbolism within history, reviewing known icons and gestures.
Vasl is an artist-led organisation established in 1999, in Karachi, as a platform for dynamic Pakistani art and contemporary Pakistani artists and as a space to host artists’ workshops, residencies and exhibitions.
Jamie George’s Fellowship will be a practice-led prelude to a wider project running throughout 2012 at Vasl. Focussing on curatorial and cultural administration within Pakistan and internationally, the Curatorial Knowledge Workshop will culminate in an international group residency and research website in Autumn 2012 aiming to generate new ideas around expanded curatorial and cultural research practices in Asia. This project is supported by Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) and Arts Network Asia (ANA) as part of the programme Creative Encounters: Cultural Partnerships between Asia and Europe.
