Introduction
This new section of the lay out - gasworks web-site outlines how the ideas from the consultancy have been incorporated into the overall refurbishment programme. This section includes a downloadable PDF of the plans for the refurbishment designed by Boehm and Lang, a section of images which catalogue the progress of the refurbishment which will be changed every two weeks, and a section which outlines other developments such as The Gas Board project which will see four artists commissioned each year to make work for the new billboard area on the facade of the building and Streetmatters which was an education and outreach project which also stemmed from the consultancy.

Gasworks is due to re-open in Summer 2004 with a series of events to celebrate the completion of Lay Out - Gasworks which will see extensive refurbishment works to the ground floor of the building.

The refurbishment also includes a programme of repair works to the first and second floors of the building which have been necessary in order to alleviate structural subsidence which was uncovered during the start of the refurbishment programme. This discovery has necessitated an insurance claim which in-turn has led to a delay in the completion of this project.

The designs for the refurbishment are a direct result of the creative consultancy led by Kathrin Böhm and Andreas Lang in Summer 2002. The finished results, conducted by Böhm/Lang; will include a new 'lay out' of the ground floor of the building which will include the following changes:

A PDF of the refurbishment plans can be downloaded here.

When completed it is hoped that the newly refurbished ground-floor will better meet the needs of our audiences, exhibiting and visiting artists; studio artists and staff.

We are grateful to the Regional Arts Lottery Programme, The Bridge House Trust, Lambeth Riverside and The Garfield Weston Foundation for supporting Lay Out - Gasworks.

Other developments

While we have been closed, Gasworks Gallery has been developing our forthcoming programme and exploring a number of ideas and projects which also were a result of the Lay Out – Gasworks consultation. These include Street Matters led by Barby Asante with pupils of Archbishop Tenison’s School in Vauxhall and the development of The Gas Board which is a series of four artists commissions for the new billboard on Gasworks façade. The forthcoming programme and details of other projects in development can be see on www.gasworks.org.uk.
