TrAIN Residency at Gasworks

1st October 2007 - 20th December 2007

The Research Centre for Transnational Art, Identity and Nation (TrAIN) is teaming up with Gasworks International Residency Programme to offer a fully funded three month residency and research placement for an artist not based in the UK.

THIS RESIDENCY OPPORTUNITY IS NOW CLOSED

The residency comprises:
- accommodation and living expenses in London
- a private studio at Gasworks
- access to University of the Arts London library and research facilities
- contribution to research culture and seminars at TrAIN
- an Open Studio and artist's talk at Gasworks
- administrative, academic and curatorial support from both institutions.

Offering both practical and academic research facililities, this residency focuses on professional development, artistic exchange and the development of artistic process. The support, networks and creative environments that Gasworks and TrAIN can offer will provide the artist with the means to research and experiment with new work, taking an important step in an international context.

This residency is open to emerging and mid-career artists not based in the UK. The selected artist should be in a strong position to make an enthusiastic, discursive and speculative engagement with both the academic and studio environments.

Gasworks and TrAIN are located ten minutes' walk apart in central London, close to Tate Britain, local galleries and excellent transport links.

The residency is scheduled to take place during October-December 2007.

Selection and eligibility
This residency aims to combine the structure of Gasworks International Residency Programme (as described above) with the research interests and facilities at TrAIN (linked above).

The residency is open to contemporary artists working in all disciplines, however one must note the restricted facilities. Emerging and mid career artists involved in high quality art practice who have not had the opportunity to work in London before are prioritised.

The applying artist should be able to develop work within both the studio environment and the research/university environment. This does not necessarily prioritise academically-based artists (though these artists are eligible) but those whose engagement is sufficiently enthusiastic, discursive and speculative. Academic experience such as publication, leading discussions, postgraduate research, and lecturing experience are not required, but applying artists should be working at a standard where they can engage and contribute on this level.

We are seeking artists whose practice, interests and approaches show that they are in a position to benefit from, and to make a critical contribution to this residency and the networks around it.

Applying artists may wish to follow a specific research interest, but should be prepared to be flexible. A project proposal is not necessary to apply.

Applying artists should have a good level of spoken English, and should feel comfortable engaging in artistic discussions in English.

The selection panel will comprise the Residency Curator and Residency Assistant at Gasworks, and members of TrAIN (full selection panel to be announced).
