Andres Bedoya’s work weaves personal history with that of the Andean region of Bolivia. Often using precious and ephemeral materials, and devices including repetition and craft techniques, Bedoya’s work oscillates between history and the present, temporality and permanence, decay and renewal, and formal and informal cultural practices. Historical and biographical narratives are interwoven through materiality and storytelling, to reflect on memory, territory, conflict, loss and family.

At Gasworks, Bedoya plans to investigate the Victorian tradition of hair art and relics, craft objects that ritualized grief and represented familial bonds through engagement with bodies of the living and the dead. His work will consider the parallels between these practices and other similar rituals around the world, to open up a dialogue around trauma and how it may be mediated with and through the body.

Andres Bedoya lives and works La Paz. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in design from the University of Texas, Austin. Recent solo exhibitions include Still Life with Others, Situations, New York (2018); Presente, Centro Cultural de España en La Paz (2017); El viaje, SCAD Museum of Art, Savannah, Georgia; and Paisaje, Metales Pesados Visual, Santiago (both 2016). Recent group exhibitions include I see you, SCAD Musem of Art, Savannah Georgia; Origen y Mito, Saco, Antofagasta, Chile; Reflexiones simultaneas, Museo Nacional de Arte, La Paz (all 2018); and Objeto, Centro de la Cultura Plurinacional, Santa Cruz (2017).
