Berni Searle's recent work expresses her concern with the internationalisation of categories dictated by social history and circumstances. For the Open Studio she documented the process of staining her hands, focussing on the appearance and disappearance of colour over a period of time. As an extension of the 'Discoloured' series the work aims to set off a series of reflections on issues of representation and identity.

Berni Searle is a Cape Town based artist who has exhibited nationally and internationally, including the 2nd Johannesburg Biennale (1997), and the 7th Cairo Biennale (1998). She participated in DAK' ART 2000 in Senegal in April and was a finalist for the Vita 2000 award. She is featuring in Authentic/Ex-centric: Africa In and Out of Africa at the 49th Venice Biennale.
