from the back of your mind, 2019
Paper dyed by hand with beetroot and onion, screen print.
Series of 21, all unique*
42 x 59.4cm, unframed
As part of our 25th Anniversary, Gasworks alumni artist Johanna Unzueta, who was in residence with her long-term collaborator Felipe Mujica in 2004, has produced an exclusive limited edition artwork. Each individual work is unique and has been hand-made by the artist. For her Gasworks edition, from the back of your mind (2019), Unzueta spent a week in residence at Gasworks creating a natural dye made from beetroot and onions, which was then applied to paper by hand in a variation of layers. The dyed paper has been screen printed with an original drawing that Unzueta specially produced for Gasworks. The resulting series of 21 works are each unique in colour and texture.
Unzueta's drawings are created through a process that includes dyeing the paper with indigo, fustic or other organic pigments. Combined with abstract geometric patterns, her work puts in dialogue a history of geometric abstraction in Latin American contemporary art with traces of traditional indigenous craft practices, disrupting distinctions between art and craft. Her works, often intricate and time consuming, question labour and its technological, historic and social impacts on the human condition.
Johanna Unzueta (Chile, 1974) lives and works in New York. She received her art degree from Universidad Catolica de Chile. She has been widely exhibited internationally with solo shows at Modern Art Oxford (forthcoming 2020); Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum, Michigan State University (2019); Sala de Arte Publico Siqueiros, Mexico City (2017); Jewett Art Gallery, Wellesley College, Wellesley (2017); Galeria Gabriela Mistral, Santiago de Chile (2016); Galeria Dei Ecke, Santiago do Chile (2010); Proyectos Ultravioleta, Guatemala City (2013); Queens Museum of Art, New York (2009). She was featured in We Don't Need Another Hero, the 10th Berlin Biennale curated by Gabi Ngcobo (2018), and is a selected artist for the 2018-20 Open Sessions programme at The Drawing Center, New York. Her work was acquired by the Tate in 2018 with the support of the Frieze Tate Fund
