This print has been produced following Kemang Wa Lehulere’s first UK exhibition sincerely yours, held at Gasworks in September 2015.
Wa Lehulere’s practice explores how South Africa’s past continues to haunt the present by weaving and unraveling the relationships between personal and collective histories, amnesia and the archive. My apologies to time, again, depicts a stamp from a country which no longer exists. It echoes a work Wa Lehulere created for his Gasworks show, which he carved directly into the wall of the gallery space.
Kemang Wa Lehulere was born in 1984 in Cape Town where he lives and works. He is currently showing new work at Stevenson Gallery, Cape Town. Recent solo exhibitions include: Bird Song, MAXXI, Rome and Deutsche Bank KunstHalle, 2017; In All My Wildest Dreams, Art Institute of Chicago, 2016; and sincerely yours, Gasworks, 2015.
Wa Lehulere is the recipient of many awards including the Standard Bank Young Artist for Visual Arts in 2015 and Deutsche Bank's Artist of the Year 2017. He was shortlisted for the 2017 Future Generation Art Prize and 2017 and received the fourth Malcolm McLaren Award 2017 during Performa 17.
