Pulmonary Aspiration, 2018
Silk fabric, dyed in Fanta
Edition of 15
Approximately 45cm x 35cm, unframed
Former residency artist Sriwhana Spong has produced a beautiful limited edition exclusively for Gasworks.
Pulmonary Aspiration is made of brightly coloured silk fabric that has been dyed in Fanta. The work draws on the use of common food items in Balinese culture as daily offerings—transforming everyday foods into mediums of contact with the sacred.
The work considers the power of collective experience by acknowledging these consumed substances’ effect as being at once both toxic and joyous.
Originally from New Zealand, Sriwhana Spong lives and works in London. Recent exhibitions include: a hook but no fish, Pumphouse Gallery and Govett Brewster Art Gallery, New Zealand (2018); Im Wintergarten, daagalerie, Berlin (2015); 24 Frames per Second, Carriageworks, Sydney (2015); Sights and Sounds, The Jewish Museum, New York, (2015); Art Basel Hong Kong Film Sector (2014).
