Gasworks studio artist Evan Ifekoya has produced a limited edition t-shirt exclusively for Gasworks on the occasion of their first UK solo show, Ritual Without Belief, which took place 5 July – 2 September 2018.
The exhibition comprised an installation and extended sound work which Ifekoya describes as, ‘a black queer algorithm across generations, locations and political affiliations’.
The tie-dye of the t-shirt echoes the installation which featured an ocean-like pattern covering the floor, arching upwards in waves at either end of the gallery and the text refers to an element of the sound work - the artist’s exploration of non-monogamy, and one in a series of seven proposals. This one, 'The Last Married Couple on Earth,' considers the potential for non-monogamy and relationship anarchy to contribute to the dissolution of capitalism.
Evan Ifekoya has recently exhibited at Gasworks, 2018; Contemporary Arts Centre New Orleans as part of Prospect 4; Embassy Gallery, Edinburgh; New Art Exchange, Nottingham; Plymouth Arts Centre; Serpentine Galleries, London; Wysing Arts Centre, Cambridgeshire (all 2017); Transmission Gallery, Glasgow; and Stevenson Gallery, Cape Town (all 2016).
